Devtober 2021 Postmortem


[Introduction]

SongOfMorus--SoulfulScarlet is a 2D shooter game experimenting height layer mechanic. The project started in Magical Girl Game Jam #4, and extended during Devtober 2021. Although not goals are achieved, i still want to write a  postmortem  for it.

[What went right]

The original plan is to use this game jam to boost up the overall quality, introduce a sidekick character and add 2 tutorial levels.  So far, i have fulfill the first two goals. , The game balance is improved with a new shield defend mechanic is added.  I also enrich the scene decorations, and improve quite some visual effect. A new character Aurum is also added into the game with his own themed soundtrack, who will be a tutorial guide in this game, and maybe a sidekick character in the far future. The game ending is also changed to give the game a more heartwarming vibe.

[What went wrong]

However, I failed to finished the tutorial levels. The plan was that there would be one hand holding tutorial level, and a boss fight tutorial level. But somehow i get distracted by other personal project (related to Polandball meme, subscribe me if you want more news about it) . Also there are some detail that i feel funny to add but cost more time than i expected. 


[What to fix in the future]

I feel that when it's a smaller game jam, i have more motivation to develop. Or maybe it's just me getting lazy.

[Conclusion]

As it's a personal project, i will keep finishing the remain tasks. Let's hope i can release a version in 1-2 weeks. After that, i may take a short rest, but i have already get some idea for the next phase of the project.
